Your Hurricane Relief Brings Booze Relief

There have been stories about victims of hurricane Katrina who got their $2000 from the federal government for the basic necessities. These folks were supposed to be buying clothes and food and all kinds of other things and I am sure most of them were. But that small group of jerks who abuse things cast a bad light on everyone. There have been stories of people going to bars and strip clubs. There have been stories of people gambling with the money. and Now there is more of the same. This is from Camp Katrina, a web site run by a soldier from Ohio who served in the Gulf to assist in the recovery efforts:

BOURNE – Hurricane Katrina evacuees hastily handed $2,000 in federal relief money last month have been living it up on Cape Cod, blowing cash on booze and strippers, a Herald investigation has found.

. . . the Herald observed a virtual parade of evacuees from a bus stop in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Falmouth to nearby liquor stores. Some emerged and openly swilled from brown-bagged containers, while others poured booze into jugs or plastic cups and casually sipped drinks at the Wal-Mart bus stop.
While I’m sure the majority of refugees affected by the indiscriminate forces of Hurricane Katrina have genuinely suffered through an experience they would never want to repeat, I’m equally certain of something else: that some evacuees, although they may not admit it, count this as the biggest jackpot they’ve ever hit.

I encourage you to go the site and read the story. The site is full of interesting stories from the folks who were there.
