Why Does Dept Of Education Need Shotguns?

The Department of Education wants twenty-seven shotguns.

When I first looked at this I thought it might be for sporting programs and that maybe some school systems had skeet or trap teams. But once I read the summary I knew that could not be the case. The shotguns requested have 14″ barrels which would not be good for either sport. Further reading shows that the intent is for tactical purposes:

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) intends to purchase twenty-seven (27) REMINGTON BRAND MODEL 870 POLICE 12/14P MOD GRWC XS4 KXCS SF. RAMAC #24587 GAUGE: 12 BARREL: 14″ – PARKERIZED CHOKE: MODIFIED SIGHTS: GHOST RING REAR WILSON COMBAT; FRONT – XS CONTOUR BEAD SIGHT STOCK: KNOXX REDUCE RECOIL ADJUSTABLE STOCK FORE-END: SPEEDFEED SPORT-SOLID – 14″ LOP are designated as the only shotguns authorized for ED based on compatibility with ED existing shotgun inventory, certified armor and combat training and protocol, maintenance, and parts.
The required date of delivery is March 22, 2010.
Interested sources must submit detailed technical capabilities and any other information that demonstrates their ability to meet the requirements above, no later than March 12, 2010 at 12 PM, E.S.T. Any quotes must be submitted electronically to the attention of Holly.Le@ed.gov, Contract Specialist (Contract Operations Group), with a concurrent copy to Sherese.Lewis@ed.gov, Contracting Officer (Contract Operations Group). Why would the Department of Education need tactical shotguns and why does it have an existing inventory of them??

There might be a good reason but I do not know what it is.

This is another of the things government does that makes you wonder if the inmates are running the asylum…

    My guess is?
Inner city schools? P-C has it so the teachers can’t discipline the kids, can’t touch them. So the [redacted] bandito comes to class in his baggies and team colors, tattooed and full of da drug, wants ta handle the [redacted] of the departo-mento.

“Hey my…teach, you looking kinda sweet! I gonna handle yo seat, spread it out sister or I raise on yo head a big blister, make yo toes start to wiggle and my &%^$ starts to jiggle, make you scream a little louder while a snort dis magic powder…”

The home-ec teacher neeeds have some veloco-raptor stopping power in the over-head cabinet…

Just my guess. Not P-C, just true.

  2. There are one hell of a lot of government agencies whose minions routinely carry firearms — and state and local gendarmes never, ever ask them for evidence of compliance with state or local gun laws.

Environmental Protection Agency employees, for example, routinely carry handguns. Wonder what they might need them for.

Incidentally, John Ross’s book Unintended Consequences is a wealth of information on this and related subjects.

Francis- the EPA might encounter some whacked out spotted owl that wants a fight, and doesn’t know that the EPA worships them.
But you are correct in your question of whether the EPA needs them at all, especially since most of the EPA are loony eco- nuts that don’t even know which end of a gun you should point at an assailant.
As far as the shotguns- they are some sweet models, but 14″ barrels are supposed to be a no- no in the real world. They WOULD be nice to have though- but they probably paid waaaaay too much for them.
