What Is The Main Reason For Poverty Among Blacks?

The hurricane Katrina fiasco, not the FEMA response but the race baiting that took place afterward, exposed a sore in the liberal philosophy and I believe all the finger pointing was designed to take attention away from the underlying problem. That problem is that so many of the poor in New Orleans were dependent upon the government and were unable to take care of themselves when they needed to. They have been taken care of for so long that they lack the will or knowledge to take care of themselves. This goes for all poor that live off the government but applies especially to the black community in New Orleans because they were the largest segment of the community. The Democrats realized early on that if the fiasco showed their failed policies they would be sunk. So they deflected the blame. Walter E Williams has this to say:

Though I grow weary of pointing it out, let’s do it again. Let’s examine some numbers readily available from the Census Bureau’s 2004 Current Population Survey and ask some questions. There’s one segment of the black population that suffers only a 9.9 percent poverty rate, and only 13.7 percent of its under-5-year-olds are poor. There’s another segment that suffers a 39.5 percent poverty rate, and 58.1 percent of its under-5-year-olds are poor. Among whites, one segment suffers a 6 percent poverty rate, and only 9.9 percent of its under-5-year-olds are poor. The other segment suffers a 26.4 percent poverty rate, and 52 percent of its under-5-year-olds are poor. What do you think distinguishes the high and low poverty populations among blacks?

Would you buy an explanation that it’s because white people practice discrimination against one segment of the black population and not the other or one segment had a history of slavery and not the other? You’d have to be a lunatic to buy such an explanation. The only distinction between both the black and white populations is marriage — lower poverty in married-couple families. Townhall.com

Mr. Williams points out that married couples suffer lower rates of poverty. I contend that the lack of two parent households results in people seeking more help from the government and helps fuel a cycle of poverty that continues as single parent children become single parents themselves.

And for those who will say that Mr. Williams is a bigot, he is a black man who happens to be very successful. Of course, if Michael Steele is any indication, Williams will be called all kinds of names by the black community, especially the elected leaders.

Surprisingly, rapper 50 Cent had this to say:

Rapper 50 CENT has lashed out at fellow hip-hop star KANYE WEST for accusing US President GEORGE W BUSH of racism in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The IN DA CLUB star believes human intervention could not have prevented the effects of the hurricane, which killed over a thousand people in the US gulf states in August (05), and sees no point in reprimanding the President for something which was beyond his control.

He says, “The New Orleans disaster was meant to happen. It was an act of God.

“I think people responded to it the best way they can.

“What KANYE WEST was saying, I don’t know where that came from.”

That was the entire article but I got it here.
