Oprah Winfrey has said in the past that she does not want to use her show as a platform for politicians. The woman who has nearly monopolized daytime talk broke with that opinion when she had Barack Obama (PBUH) on her show. Oprah went out to rallies for Obama and then she allowed him time on her show in order to present his case to the women of America who happen to watch her show.
Oprah took a lot of heat for her endorsement and was eclipsed by Ellen Degeneres as top daytime talker (though she might be back on top). Oprah then backed off all the up front Obama support but kept supporting him with cash. This is her choice but now she is in a bit of a tight spot. Oprah’s website has been deluged with requests to have Sarah Palin on the show. Her staff is divided on the issue but it appeared that the idea was getting serious consideration. In the end though, Oprah opted not to allow any politician except the Sainted One to appear on her show. Oprah said she would be glad to have Palin once the election is over.
What is Oprah afraid of? Could it be that she sees Palin as a threat to The One? Does Oprah worry that a great appearance by Palin would send voters away from Obama? I am willing to bet that Oprah is afraid that if Palin appears and it helps her she will have helped put away the Sainted One. The hypocrisy is thick in the air.
Hypocrisy? Of course! Oprah continually tells her female viewers that they can do anything they want, they can be a success and that they should get out there and go for it. Sarah Palin is living proof that it can be done. She is the example that shines light upon what Winfrey tells her viewers. An appearance by Palin would overshadow Obama and be a serious blow to his chances. Oprah knows this and is working for Obama in order to help him win.
It is her show and she is free to do what she wants but the refusal to have Palin on might have serious consequences. Suppose all those women who are requesting an appearance decide that Oprah is playing politics or that she is unfair. Suppose they decide that she is a hypocrite or is trying to give an advantage to The One. Suppose a large group of women see Oprah as no better than Obama and the other sexists in his camp who viciously attacked Hillary.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. ideally, Oprah loses a huge fan base and the affected women vote against Obama because of it. Will it happen? It all depends on how long women will continue to allow themselves to be used as political pawns.
