One doesn't need to be hogtied to the extent that they can't undue themselves but rather only to the degree that it provides the experience of being constrained. And in this case, it apparently was to the degree necessary to keep him from removing, *quickly enough* whatever it was that was suffocating him. But, he was on the verge, or over the verge, of passing out. That's how this game works. Hence the danger of attempting to mechanically (and nearly) asphyxiate yourself while unsupervised.
