The Nobel Appease Prize

Smokin' O

Barack Obama was the “surprise” winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. As my co-writer Blake points out, he has not done anything to earn it. I have to agree, what has Obama done to earn the award? He has been in office for only nine months and nothing he has done has resulted in any kind of peace.

Even those except his most ardent supporters would have to ask what he has done to get this award.

As far as I am concerned the award means little. It has been given to people who have had little to do with peace including Al Gore (who received his for something that was supposed to be science) and Yasser Arafat (who was anything but peaceful). The award is basically a political award and is used to push an agenda, to give some credibility to the people who espouse the same views of the committee regardless of accomplishment.

The nomination of Obama was made just before the 1 February deadline and only 2 weeks after he took office. What was he nominated for? His acts up to that point certainly did not warrant the prize. If the nomination is for past deeds then he certainly did not qualify.

If it was for the deeds of the past nine months then one has to ask what he has done to earn it. What did he do that made him more deserving than the other nominees who actually have accomplishments in the area of peace? Obama has not brought peace to the Middle East. His relationship with Israel is strained and he has coddled terrorists as well as others who wish to do us harm. He has talked a good game but that is not worthy of the award.

This was purely a political move designed to bolster a man who was hurt by the IOCC and by his continual missteps on the world stage.

I am not saying that Obama would not have a term in office (or work after he is out of office) that eventually led to him actually deserving the award, that is something we cannot know. However, it is clear that he has done nothing, up to this point, to deserve it.

The award has always meant little as far as I am concerned because of some of the folks who received it and more importantly, those who did not. Reagan never received one and he certainly had more to do with peace than Carter, Gore or Obama. But the award has been made political and that tarnishes it, in my view.

If Obama has done anything to earn this award it was his appeasement of our enemies and the rogues around the world who would do us harm.

Perhaps the committee thought they were voting on an Appease Prize*…

*Thanks to my friend Doug Ross for this term.

Wow. So nice to see such an honor bestowed upon an American again. You would think people who are proud of American would be thankful.

Interesting bits and a few reasons:

“Obama’s election and foreign policy moves caused a dramatic improvement in the image of the U.S. around the world. A 25-nation poll of 27,000 people released in July by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found double-digit boosts to the percentage of people viewing the U.S. favorably in countries around the world. That indicator had plunged across the world under President George W. Bush.

The Nobel committee praised Obama’s creation of “a new climate in international politics” and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage.

“You have to remember that the world has been in a pretty dangerous phase,” Jagland said. “And anybody who can contribute to getting the world out of this situation deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.”

Obama is the third sitting U.S. president to win the award: President Theodore Roosevelt won in 1906 and President Woodrow Wilson was awarded the prize in 1919.

Former Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, said Obama has already provided outstanding leadership in the effort to prevent nuclear proliferation.

“In less than a year in office, he has transformed the way we look at ourselves and the world we live in and rekindled hope for a world at peace with itself,” ElBaradei said. “He has shown an unshakeable commitment to diplomacy, mutual respect and dialogue as the best means of resolving conflicts. He has reached out across divides and made clear that he sees the world as one human family, regardless of religion, race or ethnicity.”

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses.”

Congratulations to President Obama and America for this honor.

The only people not happy it seems? Some Muslims, some republicans.

    Bit:

“Upon being called by ABC News at 5:45 ET this morning, a White House aide said, “This better be good.”

When told by ABC News that the president had won the Nobel Peace Prize, the aide replied: “Oh, that is good.”

    • Blake says:

BD is right- it is an appeasement award, given to a man who has done nothing to earn it. This is an EMBARRASSMENT TO AMERICA.
We have been given the consolation prize, the “just for showing up” prize that you give the poor sad sack who just can’t play in the big leagues, but you feel sorry for.
      It is disgusting.

  2. Big Dog says:

And yet there are many in the Arab world who think it is too early or embarrassing.

He was given the award for hope…

And don’t play the One would think and American would be proud BS here. We are proud when we earn something, not when it is handed to us for no effort.

That is the difference between the sane and you libs, you expect to have things given to you for doing nothing.

The rest of us expect to work for it.

You can use the liberal spin for this but the other nominees were more worthy. Then again, that was never a criteria for the left.

Let’s see how this plays out when we are at war with Iran…

Right. Under Bush the US earned worldwide disdain, with Obama it has been the exact opposite.

  8. Big Dog says:

It does not matter if the picture is fake. Obama smokes so the story is true even if the document is phony. Sound familiar? That was the left’s argument after the Dan Rather forged documents, it did not matter because the story was true (it was not).

So it does not matter if the picture is real because what it depicts is true.

Darrell, you sound like you would give an award to a cockroach!

  11. Big Dog says:

There you go again Darrel. Blake asked if you had considered it. You removed that part to make it seem as if he asserted that it was in fact done.

    You are very dishonest.

I edit quotes to make them shorter, as per YOUR request.

As anyone can see by moving their eyes only three lines up, Blake said:

“Have you ever considered that in the real world, one of you nut jobs digitally REMOVED the cigarette from hiz Wholiness’ lips?”

      Which is of course, absurd.

Blake got busted and rather than admit he was wrong, like the intellectual coward that he is, he pulled something from his bottom. You want to defend that behavior and make stuff up about me being dishonest? Knock yourself out. Readers will reach their own conclusions.

      D.

      • Blake says:

I posited a speculation, as it is just as easy to put a cigarette in as take it out. I do not know one way or the other, and if you were not the photoshop guy, you do not know either. Either side is valid until one is not.

        Actually, it isn’t.

        [paste from other thread]

Here is your comment, in it’s entirety:

“Have you ever considered that in the real world, one of you nut jobs digitally REMOVED the cigarette from hiz Wholiness’ lips?”

Aside from the fact anyone could look three lines up and see your comment in it’s entirety, my editing STILL did not change your context. Notice, you DID NOT say:

“Have you ever considered that maybe…”

Then you would, maybe, if I was quoting something you had said a week ago and people couldn’t easily check the context by looking three lines up, have a point.

But you don’t have a point because you didn’t say that. You said “in the real world” meaning, in reality. You are claiming, in reality, that someone removed a cigarette from his lips in this photograph. You are claiming that this is the reality, the “real world,” and you asked if I considered this reality. That’s just how English works. Sorry about that.

If you are done with distracting with absurd claims and false charges of dishonesty, why don’t you just be a big boy and admit your mistake. The photo is a well known fake that was exposed immediately. We know who took the original and when and where. Also, for those who can see well, it’s pretty obvious that the cigarette is too bright and doesn’t cause any indentation in his lips.
