Soviets Tried To Pop The Pope

An investigation by the Italians concludes that leaders of the former Soviet Union were behind the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. The Pope was shot in 1981 in St. Peter’s Square (a bit of irony in itself). It appears that the Soviets were worried that the Pope’s support for the Polish solidarity movement would cause harm to the Union. It appears they were right because, as we all know, the collapse of communism eventually came to fruition.

As Stop the ACLU puts it:

While this isn’t a complete shock, it is ironic that their assisination[sic] attempt helped start the dominoe[sic] effect that eventually led to their own fall.
