Religious Science

So, I saw a movie the other day and heard an interesting quote. In the movie, the actor was addressing a science class and said something along the lines of this:

Science is good. And science can be accurate. But the Bible is Truth. If, when you are conducting an experiment, you find that the results conflict with the Bible, it is not the Bible that is wrong, but your science.

He was saying that to a class at a government school in the year 2000. You can imagine the uproar. And I’m quite sure that the vast majority of people today would find that statement repulsive, inaccurate, or just plain silly.

However, if you take a basic class in science in any government institution today, you will hear that exact same statement. Well, with one tiny modification:

Uniformitarianism is truth. If, when you are conducting an experiment, that you find the results conflict with uniformitarianism, is it not uniformitarianism that is wrong, but your science.

But somehow, since scientists created unformitarianism, that is a better religion for science. Now go back and read that first quote again. Then, pick the religion on which you will base your eternal soul.

    In a movie.

About 1/3 of Americans are biblical inerrantists. This fellow was rather popular:

“The Bible is the inerrant…word of the living God. It is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc.”
–Jerry Falwell, Finding Inner Peace and Strength, (pg. 26.)

Upon what basis would someone assume there is an “eternal soul?”

    • Mr. Ogre says:

Yes, in a movie. That’s what I posted. Correct.

And yes, 66% is a majority. Correct.

I’m not sure why your comment consists of telling me what I said. Thanks for confirming, though.

    • Blake says:

Darrel- on WHAT basis would you conclude that there is NOT an eternal soul?
To assume an eternal soul takes faith- something you have demonstrated in the past that you have little to none of.
That is fine for you, I do not seek to convert anyone, but why is it so important to atheists to try their best to abuse our beliefs?
I believe God created you to test our faith- you are free to believe otherwise.

      • Blake says:

And as for this high-falutin’ “free thinkers” title- it’s just wrong- you have boxed yourselves into a corner where disbelief is ALL you can believe in, and that is rather claustrophobic to me.

BLK: “on WHAT basis would you conclude that there is NOT an eternal soul?”>>

I’m all for immortality and think it is a great idea. But freethinkers, rational folks, those interested in getting to the actual truth of the matter try to look at the question carefully and guard against succumbing to the temptation of wishful thinking or believing such an extraordinary claim without good reason. When one looks at the question objectively and tries to measure the evidence impartially, we see there is good reason to not believe in immortality, and really nothing in it’s favor.

        The Case Against Immortality

BLK: faith- something… you have little to none of.”>>

Correct. I don’t believe in developing beliefs without good reasons. Faith is believing things without good reasons. If you have good reasons, you don’t appeal to faith.

BLK: “why is it so important to atheists to try their best to abuse our beliefs?”>>

        Ogre provided a false dichotomy:

“pick the religion on which you will base your eternal soul.”

Which left out the most likely possibility. No soul. I simply pointed this out.

BLK: “I believe God created you to test our faith…”

You may be on to something. The letters in my full name can be rearranged to read:

        “Lords Horned Challenger”

        I’m rather proud of that.

I see that there is a larger picture that Ogre is alluding to; we base our lives on principles that not only comfort us today in life, but one’s we imagine will sustain us through the mystery of death.

I know that many people are, if not flat out afraid of, certainly apprehensive about that final door. None that cross there come back to tell us about it.
It is the final line you only cross once.

Oh, don’t bother telling me about those that die and came back to life. If the came “back to life” they didn’t die. Period, end of exercise. Shiny light at end of tunnel, blagh blagh blagh. They didn’t exit any tunnel or they would be farkin dead.

1/3 of Americans today are Bible inerrantists; and trust me! I had to look that word up! Means they believe there are no mistakes in the bible. And thank you for quoting Jerry. OMG! You take one man in one religion to be the messiah of Christianity?
Falwell was not Obama, buddy. He was just a mam. He died and now he knows but he sure isn’t telling us.

What Ogre is saying is that people need to have a religion, and if it isn’t Jesus or Mu hammed or Dali Lama or Buddha or Lady Gaga (my favorite!)it will be the liberal/s God of Science, in any of its multi-headed forms.

Here is an interesting question for all of you; why is it that all societies have a faith? A God, a deity a something that is bigger and smarter, and an eternal home to go to?
Even liberals, ad if you doubt, read Ann Coulter’s brilliant book on Liberals and their god. It is funnier than the Bible!

We are all from a very long line of dead people. You, me, everyone. That thought doesn’t bother me. And joining them holds no fear. It will happen.

People are created spiritual beings and not just descended from apes as the evolutionists would have us believe. You know that to be true because you are questioning and trying to find out answers to the big questions. Where did we come from, where did sin come from, how can sinful people get back to God. All those answers are in the Bible. Why do you think it is the most attacked book on the face of the earth? We are all going to live forever, the question is where? And that is another truth that cannot be changed.

      • Darrel says:

VIC: “All those answers are in the Bible.”>>

Yes they are. It’s just a matter of picking the ones you like. This seem quite clear:

“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun…
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”
        Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, 10.

“For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.”
        Ecclesiastes 3:19-20

No one dies and goes to heaven in the Hebrew Scriptures. Later the Xtians borrowed the idea of a soul from the Zoroastrians and added it to their system.

      • Eoj Trahneir says:

I know some people are not spiritual, and seriously doubt they ever were. Since we have “brecciated shoulders” (spelling?) the chances are we came from a line of tree-dwelling monkey.
We don’t know the Bible is true because the only authority to the Bible is the Bible’s claim that it is the authority, and that is called, “begging the question.”

Just because something is attacked doesn’t mean it is true.
There are answers in the Bible for all those questions, but many answers happen to be wrong.
No, sorry, we will not live forever. Everyone dies. Everyone dies. The question the Bible tries to answer is, “What happens after we die?”
Even Jesus died. On the cross, for our sins. Without death there is no point for salvation.
Can’t be changed? So, I take it you are changing the meaning of the word truth, then?
Victoria, I love you. God loves you.
But don’t use definitive arguments. It’s not your forte’.
Where “truth” lay in the definition of the word, there can be no victory for your argument.
You have to argue from faith, because faith alone can answer your questions about the God of the Bible.

        • victoria says:

“No, sorry, we will not live forever. Everyone dies. Everyone dies. The question the Bible tries to answer is, “What happens after we die?”
“It is appointed unto man to die once and after that the judgement.”
Your physcial man dies yes but not your spirit.
And without faith it is impossible to please God.
I am sorry you have no faith and I am sorry Darrel has no faith either because you are above all things without hope.
“But don’t use definitive arguments. It’s not your forte’.”
Maybe not but I don’t have to convince you of anything nor do I have to convince Darrel of anything it is not my job.

May the liberals get there first…

As Victoria mentions — our soul lives for eternity. And yes, Jesus did die — and he can back from the dead and lives on today.

Eoj: “You have to argue from faith, because faith alone can answer your questions about the God of the Bible.”

And so does science — which was my point of this post originally. Everyone has faith in something, even if it is just themselves and their own superiority.
