Props To Rangel And Pelosi

No United Nations bumper sticker

I believe that when politician do something right they should be recognized for it regardless of party affiliation. I know that might be hard to believe if you have ever read this blog because I hardly ever praise Democrats. The lack of praise on this site is not contrary to my belief it is just that the Democrats rarely get it right.

This is not the case today with Charlie Rangel And Nancy Pelosi. They both responded to a hate filled speech given by Hugo Chavez in which he equated President Bush to Satan. In a speech at a Harlem Church, Chavez said that George Bush was an alcoholic and walked like John Wayne. Rangel took exception to these remarks:

I want to express my extreme displeasure with statements by the President of Venezuela attacking U.S. President George Bush in such a personal and disparaging way during his remarks at the United Nations General Assembly.

It should be clear to all heads of government that criticism of Bush Administration policies, either domestic or foreign, does not entitle them to attack the President personally. Rangel’s Press Release

George Bush is the President of the United States and represents the entire country. Any demeaning public attack against him is viewed by Republicans and Democrats, and all Americans, as an attack on all of us.

‘You do not come into my country, my congressional district, and you do not condemn my president. If there is any criticism of President Bush, it should be restricted to Americans, whether they voted for him or not. I just want to make it abundantly clear to Hugo Chavez or any other president, but do not come to the United States and think because we have problems with our president that any foreigner can come to our country and not think that Americans do not feel offended when you offend our Chief of State’… Drudge

Rangel was right on top of this and he expressed a correct sentiment. George Bush is our president and an attack on him is an attack on us. I do have to pint out that Rangel said that criticism of Bush’s policies do not equate to personal attacks on him. I only hope the Democrats in general can take that to heart. They have launched quite a few personal attacks on President Bush. If they want credibility then they should stick to attacking policies, not the person. But all in all Rangel made a great point and I commend him for stepping forward and saying what he did.

Nancy Pelosi chimed in on this matter:

One of President George W. Bush’s fiercest political opponents at home took his side on Thursday, calling Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez a “thug” for his remark that Bush is like the devil.

“Hugo Chavez fancies himself a modern day Simon Bolivar but all he is an everyday thug,” House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference, referring to Chavez’ comments in a U.N. General Assembly speech on Wednesday.

“Hugo Chavez abused the privilege that he had, speaking at the United Nations,” said Pelosi, a frequent Bush critic. “He demeaned himself and he demeaned Venezuela.” My Way News

I rarely agree with Pelosi and though she was not as colorful and detailed as Rangel she addressed the Chavez speech in a fashion one would expect from an elected leader. For the briefest moment, some of the politicians were together on something. I nearly had a heart attack when I heard that two Democrats defended the President. This being an election year it won’t last long.
