President Makes Good Choice

The left will be going bonkers in the next few months because of the nomination of John Roberts to be the next Associate Justice to the Supreme Court. Roberts has conservative views but does not have a long paper trail to get hung with. Most of the controversial positions he has taken were on behalf of clients. A lawyer does not have to agree with something to argue for it on behalf of the person paying the bill so it would be tough to say any of the things in question were actually his opinions.

You will remember though that I warned this whole thing would be about abortion. Roberts argued against Roe vs. Wade and since he is conservative the left is out to get him because they feel he will take away their “right to murder.” As if on cue the left came out with this:

It’s all about abortion “rights”: “We are extremely disappointed that President Bush has chosen such a divisive nominee for the highest court in the nation, rather than a consensus nominee who would protect individual liberty and uphold Roe v. Wade.” –NARAL Pro-Choice America

There have been other attacks and the left made no bones about the fact they were going to happen no matter who Bush nominated. Sen. Schumer was overheard on his cell phone telling someone that “we are going to war.” This was long before anyone was nominated. It was not even a full day before the moonbats were out in full bloom. Here are some snippets from Conservative alerts:

People for the American Way is “extremely disappointed” in the President’s selection, saying it’s “a constitutional catastrophe.”

Alliance for Justice “cannot support Judge Roberts’ elevation to the Supreme Court” because President Bush has a “track record of selecting ideologically-driven, divisive candidates for the bench”.

The National Abortion Federation “calls upon the Senate to stand up to President Bush’s attempt to destroy the fragile balance on the Supreme Court”.

Planned Parenthood stated, “The nomination of John G. Roberts raises serious questions and grave concerns for women’s health and safety.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), whose most recent controversial remarks came when he compared American troops to Nazis, called Judge Roberts a “controversial nominee” who guarantees a “controversial nomination process.”

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), immediately announced that “I voted against Judge Roberts for the D.C. Court of Appeals because he didn’t answer questions [about his views] fully and openly when he appeared before the committee.”

Hinting at a possible judicial filibuster of the President’s nominee, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) announced on Fox News, “The fact that Sandra Day O’Connor stepped down creates an extraordinary circumstance.”

MoveOn.org raised $1.3 million to fight Judge Roberts… BEFORE he was even nominated, and reacted to the nomination by calling Roberts “another right-wing crony.”

NOW (the National Organization for Women) said of Judge Roberts that “our hard-won rights will be in jeopardy if he is confirmed,” and that President Bush chose “to pick a fight. We intend to give him one.”

NARAL stated that “President Bush has consciously chosen the path of confrontation, and he should know that we… are ready for the battle ahead.”

As you read these it is not difficult to see that their number one concern is reproductive issues. The thing is, there are many issues to worry about but, as I predicted, this would be all about abortion. So how will the left try to stop this. Well, they could try the filibuster but that would not meet the exceptional circumstances stipulation that was agreed upon. Of course, as I have also pointed out, you can never trust a democrat. There is nothing exceptional because these same jackasses voted to confirm Roberts for his current bench appointment. Any rational person would have to think that there could not be something exceptional now if there was not then. The left plans to try and smear this guy (or Bork him if you will) but that will not work. He simply does not have the baggage.

Now, what will happen is spirited debate and obstruction on the part of the liberals in the Senate. They will try everything to get rid of Roberts. They are going to go against tradition (the very thing they said republicans were doing if they exercised the nuclear option) and they will ask Roberts about how he will rule on things. They are not supposed to do that but it will not stop them. Schumer has said that he voted against Roberts before because he did not answer some of the questions. Too bad that was not the standard when Ginsberg was going through the process. She flat out refused to answer some questions and was confirmed nonetheless.

Here are some of the things that your employees (the Senators work for you) are saying:

It’s all about ideology: “I will not prejudge this nomination [of Judge John Roberts]. The president has chosen someone with suitable legal credentials, but that is not the end of our inquiry. The Senate must review Judge Roberts’ record to determine if he has a demonstrated commitment to the core American values of freedom, equality and fairness.” –Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid
“I look forward to the committee’s findings so that I can make an informed decision about whether Judge Roberts is truly a guardian of the rule of law who puts fairness and justice before ideology.” –Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton

Anyone want to bet whether these two vote for or against him? I bet they vote no. Harry Reid is not interested in fairness and Clinton does not know what justice is. They are supposed to review the guys credentials and ask a few questions and then vote. The problem with these nuts is they will apply what they think are the core values and we know these two are way out there.
Now here is Uncle Teddy:

“A resumè is no substitute for answering questions about whether the nominee respects the basic rights and freedoms on which the nation was founded.” –Ted Kennedy

Ted wants some questions answered. These are from his press release just after Bush made the announcement:

Will he protect average Americans when their rights are abused by powerful corporations?

Will he ensure that private companies aren’t allowed to pollute our rivers and lakes and our air?

Will he protect and preserve the progress we’ve made on equal opportunity and fairness for all Americans?

Will he separate his personal ideology from the rule of law and protect the rights and freedoms of all Americans, not just the powerful or the wealthy.

Somebody tell this drunken jackass that it is the congresses’ job to make laws that do these things and the Supreme Court’s job to ensure the laws are Constitutional. It is strange that Ted would make the last comment considering his wealth and power kept him out of jail after he killed Mary Jo. The other strange thing is that Kennedy has done a complete 180 on this. You see, he wants to ask all these questions and he wants the nominee to tell the Senate what he will do and he wants explanations. But that was not how he felt in the past. Here is an interesting bit of trivia:

At Thurgood Marshall’s 1967 Supreme Court confirmation hearing, a young Sen. Edward Kennedy lectured his colleagues on the Judiciary Committee, saying it was not their responsibility to question a nominee’s judicial philosophy, only to ascertain his legal credentials and qualifications.” –Jill Zuckman, Chicago Tribune

Well isn’t this interesting. Maybe someone should make this statement to Kennedy when he starts his questioning and then remind him of his own words, after he makes an ass of himself, of course. Perhaps Kennedy has lost too many brain cells to remember what he said. I think this link sums up Kennedy’s approach to the process. As an aside, this took place in 1967. Isn’t it time for Kennedy to leave? He has been there for way too long.

It will be a long process. It is not going to be easy. Conservative Ann Coulter believes the selection was wrong so there will be heat from both sides. My title tells that I think the President made a good choice. How can I be so sure? If he ticked off that many liberals with the selection then it must be a good one. As Rush would say, democrats do not want what is good for America.
