Mardi Gras Is A Blast

It looks like Mardi Gras went off this year despite the hurricane that wiped out the city. It seems that New Orleans can not protect itself and it can not rebuild itself but it can plan a party. Perhaps that mentality is responsible for the disaster. The floats and the parades made fun of the key figures involved in the disaster. They made fun of FEM, the DHS, and they even made fun of Nagin and his chocolate city.

I wonder if these folks had any floats with dead people on them to represent all the idiots who refused to leave. Maybe they had a float with looters on it carrying items that they stole from honest hard working people. Maybe they even had a float with William Jefferson, Democrat Louisiana, carrying out stuff from his house after misappropriating military equipment.

Do you suppose there was a float with a Red Cross truck full of supplies with a little Nagin and Blanco refusing to give any of it to the people? Maybe there was a float with a Jesse Jackson and Kanye West shouting racist remarks and spewing their race baiting rhetoric.

You have to love a city where the people in charge are so inept they leave hundreds of buses parked and leave tens of thousands of their citizens stranded (by following a plan that called for that) but still plan and conduct a party. I wonder how much of that will be charged to the US taxpayer.

Yes, there were floats making fun of the looters. In fact, there was the First Annual Blue Tarp Fashion Show.

I wasn’t a fan of Mardi Gras in the last 5 or 6 years I was living there because it had become commercialized and touristy and trashy and I’m not sure how I feel about all the money that went into throwing a Mardi Gras when the city is still trying to rebuild, but from what I heard in interviews on the news yesterday, I think maybe it’s not entirely a bad thing — it’s a distraction from all of the dispair and destruction and it’s a way to unite the ones struggling to hang on.

Traditionally the parades themselves are paid for by the clubs and krewes — individuals in the krewes pay for their own costumes and throws — but I do believe that security and cleanup is paid for by the city.

Those were not floats making fun of looters, those were looters stealing the floats!

I don’t care that they held Mardi Gras but I think it shows poor judgement but that is what Nagin and Blanco have shown all along. It just reinforces my claim that they spend more time preparing for the party then for an emergency.

As I said, I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I’ve heard interviews from residents that approved and disapproved.

However, I think cancelling Mardi Gras would have been akin to cancelling Christmas or the Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade after 9-11. Holding Mardi Gras was like having New York make it to the World Series. It was a chance for the city to say that it’s still there and it’s going to make it. It’s not beat.
