No need for an ID, just a minor problem.

# In Nevada, nearly 1,000 felons were registered illegally in 2004.

# In Wisconsin, Milwaukee election officials recently turned in 32 more voter registration workers to the district attorney’s office for possible prosecution, bringing the total cases pending to 39.

# The Ohio secretary of state is, in effect, disenfranchising voters who relied on printed applications for absentee ballots, claiming they shouldn’t get a ballot because all of the appropriate boxes were not checked. “So we are concerned that a lot of people who want to vote absentee in Ohio are not going to be able to do so,” Danforth said.

# There is a growing shortage of volunteer poll workers as that group ages: In March 2002, an unprecedented number of poll workers didn’t report for work in Los Angeles County. Almost 125 precincts opened late, and one didn’t open at all.

# Author John Fund also reports on a ticking time bomb: Since 2000, elections offices in upwards of 70 percent to 75 percent of the nation have changed voting equipment. Kim Brace of Election Data Services warns: “Every time you make a change, it has the potential of causing problems.” Inevitably, the biggest problems occur the first time the new equipment is used, she said.

# A recent Rasmussen Reports poll found that 40 percent of Americans believe there is either significant vote fraud or active suppression of people who want to vote.

# At a time of heightened security and mundane rules that require citizens to show ID to travel and even rent a video, only half the states require some form of documentation to vote.

Looks like a small problem to me.

Everyone has or can get an ID. People use ID to cash welfare checks. Those without could get an ID from the government and I am not opposed to the government bearing the cost since it will be required to vote. In Florida, the race was close enough that fraud could make a difference. Look at how the fraud of the media disenfranchised the people in the pan handle.

I have had it easy voting. All those years I spent in the military, away from my home state and out of my country. It was so easy for me when in the field all that time to swing by the voting booth and cast my ballot. It took no effort whatsoever on my part to vote. I did not have to get the appropriate ballot and make sure it was filled out and sent on time even though the postal service was not quite what you are accustomed to. Yep, I have had it real easy which is why I voted.

You know what, there is no right to vote. One would think that since we are able to do it we should take advantage of it. Those homeless folks Obama drove to the polls have no trouble getting to the liquor store.

Yes, I am stubborn. But I believe in personal responsibility. I don't molly coddle like you liberal retards who think everyone needs to be held by the hand to accomplish things. I am amazed you people know how to use a toilet without help.

Oh my. Where to start?

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest a voter ID would cut down on fraud enough to make up for those who do not fit your mold not having easy access to voting anymore.

Let me clue you in on something that seems to allude you. Not every person is like you. Not every person has a drivers license or a government issued ID. Not every person can afford to fly. Not every person can make it to the polls right on time. The right to vote is not given based on your taxes, education, ability to feed yourself, ability to drive a car, or hold down a good job.

I'm awful glad you've had no trouble voting but only a stubborn self-important jackass conservative like yourself would assume that since you're fine voting everybody else should be too and make that your argument. I've never heard anything so dumb and anything more un-American. God help us.

lets not have id to drive or cash a check either
the way Adam sees it we should not have to prove who we are.
There was fraudulent voting in a MD election and it was proved that several dead persons crowled out of the grave to vote.
Everyone should be able to show id ...why bother with a passport ?Just tell the who you are, that will go over like a lead balloon.
In this day and age of identity theft you need to prove who you are.

I don't understand how anyone with a brain could say that it is a burden for the voter to have an ID and that the system should be able to tell who they are.

There are many cases of voter fraud. Some cities have dead people voting, some have more voting than live there and some have people who vote more than once. Voting is a personal responsibility so we don't need to open it 2 months early, allow same day registration and all that crap. If you want to effin vote get up off your dead rear and do what it takes to be registered.

We need IDs to cash a check, board a plane and enter a federal building and you are going to tell us it is a burden to show one to vote? Why don't we just use the same logic for alcohol purchases. The burden should not be on the person buying booze but on the store selling it to know the purchaser is of age.

My God, it is beyond me how people harp and complain about an ID for voting. Tell me who does not have an ID. Very few people. I bet the people who complain about needing an ID to vote had one to cash their economic stimulus socialist wealth redistribution checks. When you give them money they will have a whole pocket full of IDs.

Yes, you absolutely should have to have an ID to vote and if you get caught scamming the system you should go to jail for a long time. I have been doing this for 30 years and I have never had a problem being registered or voting because i don't need people to spoon feed me to get me to do my civic duties.

If I were in charge, no early voting, must have IDs and anyone caught cheating gets severely punished. I expect liberals not to understand, they think breaking the law or safeguards to prevent lawbreaking equals an intrusion.

This is from moveamericaforward.com:

Only 5.5 percent of U.S. troops serving overseas were able to vote and actually have their vote counted in 2006, according to the Federal Election Assistance Commission. We should be guaranteeing that EVERY SINGLE MILITARY MAN AND WOMAN will have their ballot counted. CLICK HERE IF YOU CAN HELP

CONGRESS IS DISGRACEFUL IN FAILING TO ACT

The House and Senate are currently stalling on legislation that would improve troops' access to voting. A resolution for Congress to crack down on the Department of Defense to streamline the voting process for soldiers has been introduced by Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO), but the proposal has been blocked by politicians in the House of Representatives. Blunt's resolution is now stuck in the House Armed Services subcommittee with no prospects of moving forward.

But while we fight the battle in Congress, you can help our troops participate in the freedom of voting that they fight for everyday. Move America Forward has a plan to assist our men and women in war zones who want to vote!

HELP MOVE AMERICA FORWARD GET BALLOTS TO OUR TROOPS

We want to send 100,000 federal post card applications to our troops to help ensure every serviceman or servicewoman can get the ballots they need to vote. MAF has put together a HEROES' VOTING PACKET that will help give our soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen the information they need to get a ballot and have their vote counted in 2008

But voting deadlines are rapidly approaching in some states and the mail delivery times from Iraq and Afghanistan can be long. We must get the packets printed now, but we don't have the funds to do it. We need your help so our military men and women will be able to vote.

Please help our military heroes get the paperwork they need:

Aside from property taxes maybe, you pay taxes based on how much money you make, right? Thank God you don't get your way when it comes to voting rights.

There is no reason for a voter ID. The problem is not one of inclusion, but of exclusion. There is very little modern evidence outside of a few cases to suggest voter fraud is about including votes that never should have been counted. The problem lies in the fact that many people who can vote have their vote excluded for one reason or another. It's usually not even fraud, just crappy machines.

In the interest of making it drop dead simple and easy to vote the burden should not be on the voter to have an ID but for the people working the polling place to be able to verify the existence of a voter and the status of their registration by whatever means is fitting for the location and the volume of voters.

Considering how many people vote versus how few real cases of fraud there are, I'm still not quite sure why people are still on about a voter ID.

Adam, just so you know, there are no postmarks required for military mail coming from the theater. The claim was bogus because it is not required. Nice try though.

Federal law does not require a postmark for military mail and specifies that no postage is needed for military absentee ballots. Accordingly, much military mail does not receive a postmark until it reaches the United States, and some is never postmarked at all. Buyer argues that a strict interpretation of the relevant laws would require counties to accept military ballots with domestic or missing postmarks.

Gore surrogates originally claimed that Herron was an independent lawyer. The St. Petersburg Times, however, reported on November 17, that the DNC called Herron to hire him at 4 a.m. Wednesday, November 8. bnet

Now, after this fiasco there was talk from the IG and military postal. They said all mail needed a postmark but not all mail (like ballots) require postage so if it has no postage it might not get postmarked. That is why it is supposed to be accepted. Additionally, if it gets to the states without a postmark the receiving post office sometimes stamps it with one and then the state is after the election though it was clearly sent prior. It was a slick plan to deliberately discount military voters.

If you want me to take the concerns of citizens at home having problems then get rid of ACORN because it is rife with voter fraud and they are a liberal organization that works to get Democrats elected. Prosecute people who vote twice and make mandatory jail time, prosecute people who vote as someone else and add jail time. Also, it is important so people need an ID to vote. There is no legitimate argument not to make people show an ID to vote.

There is no evidence that people were scared into not voting. People said they were afraid because a police car was there. That is their problem. How do we know the cop was not voting? How do we know he did not get called to investigate Democratic vandalism?

If you are confused or afraid into not voting then maybe you should not be voting. When people in Iraq faced bombings and still voted I would say nothing here compares.

I did not tie voting to how much money you make, just how much taxes you paid and I gave everyone one vote which is generous in some cases.

Criminals lose rights one of which is to vote. A criminal record can keep you from getting a job as a cop, it can keep you from getting a security clearance and it can prevent you from owning a gun. It should also keep you from voting (for certain felonies).

The problem is, many never serve their time or they serve very little of it. If the right to vote is important then don't commit crimes which might end up costing that right.

If the right to vote is important then don’t commit crimes which might end up costing that right.

"Who do you trust in this country, the party that wants to give convicted felons the right to vote, allow people to vote 3 or 4 times, and allow dead people to vote Chicago style, but works to deny military members the right to have their votes counted or the party that wants only those who are legally allowed to vote to do so?"

This coming from a guy who wants to tie voting power to the amount of money you make.

You'd have to prove that Gore worked against those absentee ballots because they were military and not simply because they were missing a postmark like they claim. You also have no evidence it's happening again you just cite a couple of examples and say look for it.

I say look for evidence that poor people are disenfranchised by local leaders who can confuse and scare folks into not voting. That seems to happen as much if not more often than folks in the military who's absentee ballots are tossed in a trash heap with the other absentee ballots nobody cares to count.

I also don't see why convicted felons should lose the right to vote if they've served their time. I'm not for all rights being returned to felons but the right to vote is pretty important whether you're a criminal or a poor grandmother in a bad neighborhood or a soldier serving over seas.
