If Parents Were Like Government

This video says it all. Imagine if your parents (or you as parents) acted like the government.

This is what is taking place but all boiled down to the basics.

So while you applaud the government’s insatiable appetite for spending remember that the bill has to be paid and it is our children and grandchildren who will be writing the checks.

If they still have a country.

Funny. I didn’t see you folks this concerned with our children’s debt while Bush was ramming through tax cuts for the rich that didn’t pay for themselves and two wars that helped turn a surplus into year after year of deficits and skyrocketing the national debt.

Oh yes, I forgot. The people’s tolerance level on spending was conveniently exceeded when a Democrat took the White House. Let’s all go out in the streets and protest theoretical tax increases and call it a tea party and pretend we’re patriots while the vast majority of sane Americans look on wondering when Republicans will start to act like adults again…

  2. Big Dog says:

Once again you spout lies. There was no surplus. It has been shown time and again. When the government owes money it has a debt not a surplus.

You also lie, again, about tax cuts for the rich. It has been demonstrated time and again that the middle class benefited more from tax cuts which were across the board.

Y0ou also did not pay attention when I and many others complained about excessive government spending when Bush was in office.

You also neglect to see that Obama has tripled the debt in under 100 days. You fail to see that he railed against deficit spending and you fail to see that little of the spending is anything that would be considered a stimulus.

It is OK, I get it. You can’t see the truth but don’t come here and say you never heard anyone discuss spending when real conservatives discussed it all the time.

Tax cuts were most beneficial to the classes under the rich and they led to increased revenue to the Treasury. National Debt under Bush 500 billion, under Obama three times that (Clinton about a third of that).

As for wars, spending on the Military is in the Constitution. Show me where Pell grants, mouse habitats, salt marshes and studies on pig odor is contained in that document.

    And it is one war.

  3. Barbara says:

Poor Adam, he just doesn’t get it.

  4. Adam says:

Wait. I just did a keyword search for pell grants and I didn’t find it in the US Constitution! I guess you are right. That’s not constitutional. There is nothing in the US Constitution that gives Congress the right to tax and spend our money so how dare they do it? We should hang these Democrats for treason and then drain the wetlands to kill off those dreadful salt marsh mice.

I couldn’t find anything about abortion in the constitution either, though…

  5. Randy says:

First off, the only problem with Pell Grants is that there should be more of them available for more people. The returns on that investment are extraordinarily socially and financially rewarding.

Second, you are still on about the freaking mouse. It’s not in the budget, not in the stimulus.

As for war, investing in homeland infrastructure is a lot different than shoveling money into a hole in Iraq. Money has been sent over there and fallen into a mysterious void that encompasses fraud from US and foreign contractors as well as outright theft. There is very little accounting for how much of that money has been spent. The money spent in both Iraq and Afghanistan is appearing in the budget for all to see for the first time in fiscal 2010, allowing for better oversight.

  6. Big Dog says:

There is nothing in the Constitution about abortion and it was incorrectly decided by the SCOTUS. Abortion is a state’s issue, not a federal issue as pointed out in the 10th Amendment.

The Constitution allows them to tax us per the 16th Amendment.

Interestingly, the the 24th says that no person shall be denied the right to vote for not paying a poll tax or any other tax.

They must have had Democrats like those Obama keeps appointing in mind when they wrote that.

Randy, it does not matter how good you would feel about Pell Grants or the benefits. They are not in the Constitution. The Constitution does not say that if it gives a good return do it and if it did there would be the issue of who decides what a good return is.

Money hole. Hmmm, we have spent 12 TRILLION dollars on the war on poverty and there are just as many people in poverty today as when LBJ started the war on it. We should stop shoveling money into that money hole and not worry about the small amount spent in the Middle East. We will never get to 12 TRILLION.

The war on poverty has been lost and we should stop spending money unconstitutionally on it.

The Constitution does not discuss spending on homeland vs in a war. It also does not say to spend it on social programs that cost 3 times as much as military spending. They are unconstitutitonal.

We have wasted trillions on social programs that do not work and all you want to do is spend more because it makes you feel good or has some pay off that pleases you.

We shall see if there is money spent on that salt marsh. I know why Pelosi wants the money in certain areas and where it will be directed.

If it goes there will what will you say? It is not in the budget or stimulus so you think it will not go there. As I told Adam, abortion is not in the Constitution but they found a way to do it in accordance with the Constitution (and in violation of the 10th Amendment).

The government has admitted that when they spend this much money there is bound to be waste.

How is that better oversight? They want to lose money in black holes. Democrats are no more accountable than Republicans as all politicians work to get reelected.

Do you really think there is accountability on any side?

    • Randy says:

Wrong. Money spent on the war on poverty in the US may not be spent as efficiently as it could. It’s hard to gauge because poverty is a difficult thing to measure. There are many different types of poverty and it is difficult to lump them all into an all encompassing definition of “poverty”.

That being said, at least that money is here and being moved around domestically. When a welfare recipient buys food for their families, or heck even on drugs and alcohol, the money usually stays in the US. The people running those businesses then get the money to reinvest. Iraq is literally a hole. Much of the money going over there ends up in the pockets of foreign entities. That money is no longer our money.

OH! You’re my new favorite blogger fyi

  9. Adam says:

Guess the 10th Amendment gets violated in your eyes when it comes to your distaste for abortion but screw the 10th Amendment when it means we can keep gays from getting married. Those dirty, dirty gays…

The money in the stimulus may very well get spent on the salt marsh mouse and some could also go to ACORN. That won’t change the fact that your side randomly picked things the money MIGHT go to and lied to say it would be spent there FOR SURE so you could make your cheap political attacks. It’s like McCain being dumb enough to poke fun at Beaver Management or Jindal mocking studying volcanoes despite the demonstrated savings and increased security to the tax payer involved in spending that money.

Your side has been reduced simply to pure opposition and when publicly derided for lack of real policy to back up your opposition your side vomits out a joke of a budget calling for spending freezes and massive tax cuts while the economy has been in a backslide. And you are emboldened by these actions despite the insanity of it all, still believing somehow the cure for a recession is just to be fiscally responsible.

Funny, in boom times when we should be fiscally responsible Republicans have no trouble cutting taxes and spending more on wars. But now that we’re in a recession it’s time to tighten the belt? Your side is absolutely bankrupt of sound policy decisions.

  10. Big Dog says:

I have no problem if a state wants to allow gay marriage. That is a state’s right but it also means that the people of the state have the right (per the 10th).

I have a problem with courts overturning the will of the voters in states that vote against gay marriage and I have a problem with one state that opposes it being forced to recognize it because another state does.

So once again you are incorrect.

I have always been in favor of sound fiscal policies regardless of tough times or not. The problem is, you guys have a rookie in charge and you all don’t know what you are doing. But, you always have the fall back of “It was Bush’s fault.”

    True leadership.

Dumb and dumber describes the whole mess.

As for war, Congress voted to spend the money and it is a drop in the hat compared to pork, other wasteful spending and the stimulus (as well as Obambi’s budget). A very little bit of money so don’t cry about it.

  11. Randy says:

I am not a supporter of Pell Grants because they give me a warm fuzzy. They are smart policy. A person with a college education is less likely to become a criminal and more likely to find gainful employment. Not to mention start businesses that employ others. We want easier access to College for those willing to do the work to attain degrees. The primary hurdle to earning a college degree should be studying enough and meeting the challenges presented by the discipline which a student chose to learn, not money. Are Pell Grant’s unconstitutional? You make it sound as if military spending is all that tax money is allowed for in the US Constitution.

With the Salt Marsh Mouse. There is a project that exists that mentions that mouses habitat, but not the mouse itself as part of a much larger project that has more to do with flood control. There is no money in the stimulus for the project, though they may have the opportunity for a bid on the project. It’s about flood control though, not the mouse.

Paul Krugman says the GOP has become the party of Beavis and Butthead, reduced to snickering and snorting over things they find funny in Democratic policy without real policy of their own. They’re a party adrift without a rudder.

The GOP is better suited these days to be standing at the subway steps screaming about how God is coming to punish the wicked and how socialists are beaming nazi thoughts into our brains while Obama sets up a Muslim Caliphate in DC…

    • Randy says:

In the past, I would say you were being overly critical Adam, but the more I hear about birth certificates, secret Muslim loyalties and $30,000,000 for salt marsh mouses the less standing I have to put that forward.

  12. Adam says:

I kid mostly. I don’t think the party is THAT bad but I do think the crazy is in full bloom and there are too many folks still smarting from the election and fearful for the direction of the country and the economic crisis that are focusing their frustrations on myths spread around by folks like Limbaugh and Hannity and Beck. Don’t expect conservatives here to admit it though. They’re convinced I’m the one that just doesn’t get it. Maybe they’re right…

  13. Big Dog says:

Adam and I give each other a hard time but I consider him my friend. We don’t agree on many things (hell we like different baseball teams) but he is a good guy. Randy seems to be a well reasoned person who just differs in opinion. Bunny is a smart guy but he is condescending and ignorant which turns people off.

Call the party what you will but we will see how things turn out in 2010 and 2012.

If we still have a country.

As for me, I am doing OK because I do not depend on gubmint. I have a family and an education.

And Randy, why should tax dollars pay for the college education of other people’s kids? I am paying for my kids education (and I paid for mine) so why should I have to pay for someone else’s?

    • Randy says:

People who don’t perform lose their Pell Grants. It’s a good example of helping someone who is less fortunate than one’s self pull up their boot straps. Maybe it’s because I went to college in Chicago where it’s not difficult to find hard luck cases where the benefit of a Pell Grant is obvious that I am such a supporter. Many of those people tend to have children whose educations they can then afford to finance without federal help. They also take their lessons back to their sometimes impoverished communities to open businesses and employ kids and adults in a trade that doesn’t involve gangs, drugs, and violence. Sometimes they inspire those close to them to better themselves as well. I don’t mind paying the taxes for that because I like to see people succeed. In the end though, it also saves us money on folks that might otherwise end up in prison, usually making someone else the victim of a crime in the process. I believe in civic duty as well as personal responsibility.

I’m a baseball fan too by the way. One area where I do entirely disagree with Barack Obama involves where his Chicago baseball loyalties reside.

And Big Dog, I am sure if I ever ran into you in the street and we sat down for a beer, we would get along just fine. Even if we do disagree on some major issues.

      • Big Dog says:

If I ever make it back to Chicago we can get together. If you are ever heading to Maryland you let me know and we can get together and have some kind of refreshing drink.

  14. Big Dog says:

    Randy,
Adam and I have been out to dinner and we did not kill each other. In the big picture all of us want similar things. We just have different ideas about how to achieve them.

I’ve been to Chicago. Some places are OK but I would not want to live there. Weather sucks and the politics is worse there than here.

Adam is an Dodgers fan. There is no accounting for taste…

This explains why everyday when I come on here I have to read Randy and Adam arguing with your posts and although Adam would say the level of discussion has picked up around here with Randy, as far as I am concerned it is not at all productive. I have no desire to get into any conversations with Adam or Randy when they support this so called President and I would daresay that most conservatives who come here that he calls hit and run and non-contributers do leave because of them. I know I do. They dominate everything all the time and just generally piss me off and that is no conversation.

  15. Adam says:

    Dodgers what?

I have to say the level of discussion around here has really picked up lately with Randy around. We get heated with you a lot still and we don’t agree on anything whatsoever still but it’s pretty good fun. I know there’s still a lot of hit and run comments from left and right here that don’t contribute much to the conversation but I’m enjoying the comments lately.

I know you are friends with Cao and her blog so let that be an example of what you have going here that is at such a different level. Maybe it’s just that you’re incredibly stubborn in a different way but you actually have the courage to back up your point of view and not simply hide any dissent and pretend it breaks the imaginary rules on the site. I’ve tried being friends with Cao but friendly discussion does not exist at her site whatsoever if you aren’t a conservative.
