Government: Stupidity Rules!

On any given day, it is incredibly easy to spot something that the government is doing that is stupid. Then again, 95% of what the US government does on a daily basis is stupid, because they’re doing things they should not. And I know that government’s primary purpose today is to retain power and spend money, but they can’t even do that right:

First, there is a report that mentions the new fear that local and state governments suddenly cannot cover their pensions. Of course, this isn’t new, but something that politicians just don’t care about. You see, they had the money, but they spent it. And in many cases, I’m sure, those that spent it are long gone from government. But now there’s this huge fear that government can’t pay the pensions. Then there’s the easy solution (which government never takes): Hey government, join the 21st century! NO ONE pays pensions any more. Well, no one except government, government subsidiaries (GM, Banks, etc.), and union jobs. Everyone else on the planet has moved away from pensions. Know why? Because decades ago people with common sense realized they were too expensive! But government never cares about such things. Government just wants to use cash they take from working, productive people, to bribe and payoff other people. Hey government employees waiting for your free, pension money: better start saving now, because you’re going to get shafted.

Next there is this story about California selling 24 government buildings. When I saw this headline, I thought that someone in government actually grew a brain. I thought, “Oh man, this could really be the start of something good!” Then I read the details and realized is was beyond stupid. Imagine that you have spent 30 years in your house and you have paid it off. Then, someone agreed to give you $100,000 for your house, cash, but only if you stayed in the house for the next 20 years and paid them $2250 a month. Doesn’t that sound like a GREAT deal? Just so you don’t have to do the math, that’s $540,000 in payments for you — on a house you currently own. And in case you think that’s good that you get cash up front, the future value of the payments is an astonishing $12.9 million. In other words, no matter how you look at that deal, it’s crap. So that’s exactly what the government of California is doing — taking buildings they own, and giving political donors billions just so the government can get one billion today. Hey, government doesn’t care, it’s not THEIR money they’re spending!

And after all, with taxes about to increase by massive, massive amounts, government will have more money to spend anyhow! And heck, if that doesn’t work (and it never does), the government can just print more money! Then everyone will have lots of money to spend. After all, what’s the worst that could happen?

Government: Passing the Buck for over a hundred years.
