Gas Prices Up Nothing To See Here

Remember when George Bush was president and the Democrats took control of Congress? Gas prices started to rise and the Democrats claimed Bush and Cheney were in bed with big oil and causing gas prices to rise. Democrats were in control of Congress when the prices went up (and when the economy collapsed) but they continued to blame the price increase on Bush.

It was a daily ritual for some Democrat to be chauffeured to a gas station a block or two from the Capitol and then leave the car running to keep it cool inside while they got out and railed against Bush and the high gas prices. How many times did the Democratically controlled Congress launch investigations because they believed price gouging was going on? They were livid about the rise in prices and it was all because of Bush, Cheney, and the evil oil companies.

Since Barack Obama has been in office (just shy of two years) the price of gas has gone up about $1.00 a gallon (a 64% increase). I have not seen any Democrats standing at gas stations railing against Obama and his ties to the evil oil companies. I have not seen them launching investigations into gouging by the oil companies. In fact, I have not heard a peep from them about Obama’s rising gas prices.

I did not think Bush had much to do with past prices just as Obama has little to do with them now (gas is a global commodity). But the prices now point to inflation that is heading our way. Keep in mind, they don’t count energy and food when they calculate inflation.

Then again, if Democrats take notice of the rise in prices they will just blame Bush.

Cave Canem!
Never surrender, never submit.

“Democrats were in control of Congress when the prices went up (and when the economy collapsed) …”

I don’t think you’ve met a post hoc fallacy you wouldn’t employ to imply things were golden until the Democrats took over Congress. They weren’t. It would be like switching doctors and having a heart attack the next day. Must be the new doctor right? Or was it just part of a larger trend and a long time coming?

“Since Barack Obama has been in office (just shy of two years) the price of gas has gone up about $1.00 a gallon (a 64% increase).”

When Obama came into office gasoline was about $1.86 per gallon on average which was down from a peak of $4.12. When it finally returns back to the path it was headed before the recession you’ll start to see politicians getting angry again.

The article tries to make it a big deal as if to say we better drill domestically so we’ll magically keep gas prices under $2. Right. Big Oil and their shills think we’re all really dense. Maybe we are.

“But the prices now point to inflation that is heading our way.”

Yes, in great big leaps of 0.1% at a time! Be scared. Buy gold. Clean your guns.

If you actually understood inflation you would be funny. Unfortunately, you are just pathetic.

No Adam, things were not completely great under Bush and then fell because of the Democrats. It is you and your ilk who seem to think that all was well until Bush took office when in fact the country has been heading for collapse for quite some time.

Clinton had a hand in it, both Bushes had a hand in it as did Carter. It has been happening for a long time.

However, it is your ilk that keeps blaming Bush for the collapse rather than saying it was a long time coming.

So it is my duty to remind you that the collapse came AFTER Democrats took control.

And you will not see Democrats railing about gas prices as long as a Democrat is in the White House.

When Obama came into office gas was at 1.86 down from 4.12. Numbers that took place under a Democrat Congress. Perhaps they went down because he promised to support drilling for our own oil, another broken promise.

Your doctor analogy does not apply. The doctor cannot do something to me to affect my health without my consent and would need to take place longer than the “next day.” Since Congress can do things to us without our consent and since the collapse that took place under them took time and was a result of their actions at the time then they have blame.

Of course, George Soros manipulating money markets to speed up the crash and ensure an Obama victory helped along the way.

Those gas prices remained pretty steady until Dems took control and started talking all the environmental stuff and Obama reneged on his promise.

  2. Big Dog says:

As for post hoc, blaming Bush for everything is an example that you and your peeps engage in all the time.

Because Bush was president and the economy collapsed, it must have been his fault.

Not close. A lot of things combined to cause it and many of them involved Democrats like Carter and Clinton and terrorists like bin Laden and Soros.

Liberals have trouble believing in the world AS IT TRULY IS- the Oil companies are MULTI-NATIONAL COMPANIES, and as such, much of the profits they generate are out of control of our government- however, that being said, the rise in gas prices is our government’s fault- specifically Obama’s- by rescinding his promise to open the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Seaboard to exploration, he has reduced the domestic availability of oil, and that is not a good thing.

    • Blake says:

And to answer your next question, yes, oil is a “fluid” business, and Chinese demand is partly to blame, but with domestic oil, we could sell to the Chinese, and reduce the monetary imbalance- but the Anointed One will not do that.

  4. Adam says:

“If you actually understood inflation you would be funny.”

I know that we’ve had very little inflation over a two year period in which you constantly said inflation was right around the corner. The same for Glenn Beck. He likes to say it’s coming “next year.” Right. Just like I’ve been saying the Dodgers would win the World Series “next year”…since 1988. The level of inflation we’ve seen so far is healthy for the economy. We will not see the spooky inflation you keep insisting we will see.

“However, it is your ilk that keeps blaming Bush for the collapse rather than saying it was a long time coming.”

Unlike the Democrats who had control of congress for just a few months before the recession started, Bush and the GOP were in office for years before. I know, I know. Bush would have fixed it all if it weren’t for Democrats blocking him “at every turn.”

“Perhaps they went down because he promised to support drilling for our own oil, another broken promise.”

I’d have to see that promise. The price went down basically because the economy tanked and demand for oil fell. Suggestions that it would reduce the price of gasoline just to appear to want to drill is just another laughingly wrong thing your source article says.

“Those gas prices remained pretty steady until Dems took control and started talking all the environmental stuff and Obama reneged on his promise.”

Another fallacy. Gas prices had a clear trend line and it had nothing to do with environmental policy of the Democrats.

    • Big Dog says:

That clear trend line? Gas went up and back down, as it always does. Commodities do that. Glad to see you understand supply side economics, as you stated in your response “demand for oil fell” so the price went down.

The recession that Bush took over cleared and the one that took place during the reign of Democrats who had been in office nearly a YEAR (not a few months) took place under their tenure, period. The collapse was caused by the policies of Carter and Clinton under CRA.

Inflation is on the way. The Fed keeps manipulating interest rates and playing with the dollar which delays the inevitable. There is no way to avoid the inflation. You say we have had little inflation but prices have risen. Food and energy are up quite a bit. The government manipulates numbers to get what it wants and the Fed is manipulating as well.

I will keep saying inflation is on the way and you keep saying that global warming will cause all kinds of catastrophes and we will see who is correct. I bet inflation hits before the world is affected by so called GW.

Yes, I have been saying inflation is around the corner. No different from what GW folks like you have been saying for YEARS. but I am the chicken little and you guys the experts…

      Right…

  5. Adam says:

Speaking of carbon, looks like 2010 was the hottest year on NASA records. But of course there’s a blizzard in the mid-west right now so this can’t be true, right?

    • Big Dog says:

How long do you suppose it will be before NASA has to admit they used flawed data or read something wrong, like they did the last time?

No one ever said it does not get warmer. 2010 was the hottest on record but there have been plenty of hotter days. That is how climate works, in cycles. The issue is, did man cause it?

Doubt it but we have about 5 years. All the fear mongers say that we have that long or it is over so one way or another, we will find out. However, that 0.65 degree F increase is something we could not stop even if we spent the gazillions you warmers want. Man cannot control the climate.

So, it was the warmest (at least until someone admits a mistake or we find the real data) big deal. It was warmer tens of thousands of years ago and somehow life made it this far.

      What is the point?

Also, where did they measure? Just the warmer places or did they measure the cold ones and get an average?

    • Big Dog says:

But of course, everything is the result of GW so even if the temperature were to drop and be the coldest in recorded history for a decade you would claim it was caused by GW. You have a no lose scenario. Everything is caused by GW so no matter what happens you can blame it on that. Fortunately, a lot of people have had about enough of the nonsense and the lies that have been discovered.

      Hide that decline!!

      • Adam says:

“How long do you suppose it will be before NASA has to admit they used flawed data or read something wrong, like they did the last time?”

In case you failed to notice, NASA’s corrections to data over the years have not changed any trend. It wasn’t like they said it was warming, found out it was cooling, and had to reverse their decision. The climate is still warming.

“You have a no lose scenario. Everything is caused by GW so no matter what happens you can blame it on that.”

Just another lie spread by your side. You are no better than those who believe in global warming who don’t say truthful or accurate things. Those who are truthful about climate change differentiate between weather and climate and rely on what the vast majority of scientists believe: The earth is warming and humans are contributing. Your side has to watch closely for celebrities like Al Gore to make mistakes or be hypocritical (or get fat) and attack them on that.

You can’t attack the scientists. You tried with the “climate gate” nonsense but you were proven to be liars again. Too bad you didn’t get that memo. You never do actually.

        • Blake says:

Actually, Adam- the climategate memos and ancillary correspondence DO prove that the scientists are WILLFULLY ignoring “inconvenient data”, just as they always have, because all their grant money rides on the supposition that the earth is in dire need of healing by them, and they can only do this with massive infusions of cash from the taxpayer.
          What bull.
