Hmmm…up until this election cycle, Tyson Foods’ PAC had donated to (r)epukes by almost a 2 to 1 margin. This cycle, they seem to be giving more to Dems. Something is up. Did they hire an A-rab as CEO or something?

Surely, one of you crack conspiracy theorists can figure it out. REASONless- give us the dirt.

I sent this to Tyson last week, surprisingly I got a reply today.

As a native American looking for work I would like to know if Tyson would build me a ceremonial enclosure for my chanting and incantations.
I don’t expect favoritism and would be satisfied with something in the order of 25′ by 50 feet and a bed as I do a lot of religious chanting while lying down.
Also if hired by Tyson will I be forced to speak Somalian? I do speak a few words from the Pit River
tribe and perhaps I could teach the Somolian’s to speak Pit.
I am approaching 80 years and would in all probability require a few hours each day in my place of worship.
Either that or I could just stop buying Tyson products and forget about the work

Labor Day Reinstated as Paid Holiday at Shelbyville, TN, Plant
Tyson Foods Requested Change from Union

Springdale, Arkansas – August 8, 2008 – Tyson Foods, Inc. announced today it has reached a new agreement with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), an American union, reinstating Labor Day as one of the designated paid holidays under the contract for covered employees in the Shelbyville, Tennessee, plant.

Tyson made this request on behalf of its Shelbyville plant employees, some of whom had expressed concern about the new contract provisions relative to paid holidays. In an effort to be responsive, Tyson asked the union to reopen the contract to address the holiday issue, and the union agreed to do so. The union membership voted overwhelmingly Thursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plant’s paid holidays, while keeping Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this year only. This means that in 2008 only, Shelbyville employees will have nine paid holidays.

For the remainder of the five-year contract period, the eight paid holidays will include: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and a Personal Holiday, which could either be the employee’s birthday, Eid al-Fitr or another day requested and approved by their supervisor.

This issue concerns only the plant at Shelbyville, Tennessee. Labor Day has always been celebrated, and continues to be, at the other 118 Tyson plants across the country.

The Shelbyville complex employs approximately 1,200 people. Approximately 1,000 workers are covered by the RWDSU union agreement at that location.

Note: The Shelbyville plant has 250 Somali employees, not 700, as was previously erroneously reported. They were employed at the plant via the Tennessee Department of Employment Security.

WHayden I wish it truly were a “few” however if it were merely a “few” you would see more outrage on the part of the so called “moderate Muslims” who believe in peaceful co-existence when these attacks occur. However all you hear is crickets, but let someone draw a cartoon of Mohammed and Muslims across the globe are in the streets rioting. If these acts of violence were such an affront why isn’t there an equal reaction? Why were Muslims dancing in the streets in celebration on 9/11? Where was the outrage then?

There are a few who protest the violence but they are shunned and threatened like Jamal Mitfah.

Jamal is the exception not the rule, the rule are those who have threatened him and cast him out. Once America and the world realize this we can then address the true “War on Terror” which is actually a cultural, political, and ideological “War with Islam”.

I don’t eat at McDonald’s anyway. However, they are a service industry that is open on those days. Tyson had the holiday and removed it. I think there are better ways this could have been handled. CAIR has already helped fuel the suspicions of Muslim motivation and this does not make things better.

Ultimately, this is a decision by the union and the company but I don’t have to support it.

There are no religious freedoms at work. The First Amendment only states that government will not establish an official religion. Employers are not allowed to discriminate based on religion but they are not required to honor religion or make concessions based upon it.

The company already built a prayer room and allows employees their prayer times. How much more capitulation is needed? The prayer room was not required but the company did it for the workers.

I think we have seen enough examples to know that while my example might have been speculation, it is accurate.

I appreciate your input.

Thank you for your recent rebuttal Big Dog. Once again I will repeat that anyone has the right to boycott any firm or any product for any reason, real or imagined. While you say you are not “rounding up” anyone, you are figuratively rounding up all Muslims because of the actions of a few. (Bear in mind that I don’t have a problem torturing the hell out of those few.) I don’t minimize the threat posed by the very few Muslims that are terrorists. The threat is significant and I know they mean to destroy us. However, let us not forget that this country was foundly partly (a great part actually) on religious tolerance. Finally, you try to further your point by speculating on what “could” happen if the tables turned and the Muslim’s at Tyson became a minority. You author a good blog; please don’t denigrate your arguments and your passion by relying on idle speculation to further a debate. By the way, are you boycotting McDonald’s? Their workers don’t get Labor Day or the Muslim holidays off! Clearly McDonald’s is worse than Tyson. Feel free to have the last word but I have said all I can on this issue.

You should have not said “700 to 500, majority wins, welcome to america.” you should have said 700 to 500, majority wins, welcome to tyson foods. For tyson foods evidently the majority wins which means the minorities lose. In America, (note the uppercase A) we don’t have a democracy where majority wins, we have a republic, thank God (note the uppercase G). Might wanna do a little research so you can learn the difference.
