Boycott Berkeley

Who would have ever thought that a city in the United States would view members of the military as uninvited and unwelcome intruders? Well it has happened and while that might be a bit of a surprise, where it happened will surprise no one. Berkeley California has decided that the Marines at a recruiting station there are not welcome and they have done so with a 6-3 vote after which the Mayor stated:

“I believe in the Code Pink cause. The Marines don’t belong here, they shouldn’t have come here, and they should leave,” said Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates after votes were cast. Contra Costa Times

Unless I missed something that cesspool of a city is still in the US so how can Marines not belong there. The Marines are part of a group of people who made it possible for the idiots in Berkeley to say what they want and to vote this way. The Marines are doing their job and to their credit none of them have beat the hell out of the protesters who harass them all the time.

The City Council there also gave code pink a free parking space in front of the station and a free unlimited noise permit for certain times so that the group can continue to harass the Marines who have shown remarkable restraint in all this. It is unfortunate that they have to put up with a bunch of aged hippies who go through life stoned while trying to relive the “glory” years of the 60s.

I believe the federal Government should pull the Marines out of there and remove all other military units including National Guard and Reserve Units. Then the government should stop all federal money from going to the town. Not one damned cent should go there. I have read where many are saying that if a disaster occurred there that people would be begging for military support and those folks said the military should refuse to go. The reality is the people who serve are much better than the self serving twits who infest that city and they would go help to make sure their fellow citizens were helped. The military would be there for the very people who want them out.

I know I will never visit that place and I would like to see all other real Americans boycott the place. Let the liberal twits who agree with them buy from them. Don’t go there and if you absolutely have to be there for any reason then don’t buy anything. If the place gets hit with an earthquake or fire then don’t send your money to help them and if you belong to a fire department do not volunteer to go help. I imagine if the place was burning they would be begging for military helicopters to do water drops. Screw them.

Maybe the next time a terrorist decides to fly a plane into a building we will be lucky and it will be the City Council in Berkeley and get rid of the mindless twits that pretend to be Americans.

I am tired of people who treat the members of the military badly but have no problems living under the blanket of freedom afforded by those very members.

Let’s ship them to Club Gitmo!

Boycott Berkeley! Let’s save the seals and club Code Pinko members instead.

THIS IS ONE STUDENT COMMENTS ABOUT BERKELY UNIVERSITY.
What else can I say. Berkeley is a shining example of a research institution, but it isn’t much of a university. You’ll go to school with far too many undergraduate and graduate losers who smoke weed or use meth all day. This is the MOST racist school in the country. My undergrad, Auburn University was in the deep south, and the number of black engineers graduated was quite large (#15 in the country in that statistic). No, race relations are not perfect in the south, but I’ve only seen one black engineering student and one black engineering alumnus (who got hired at Auburn on the faculty, so I met him before I went out here). If you have the chance to go somewhere else, even if to a consideraly less “prestigious” school, go there. Berkeley sucks. You’ll lose your motivation and your edge.

There is a bright side. Living in Berkeey will make you mature very quickly as you are going to have to deal with the crap that the administration and the idiots in the city government allow. The most valuable lessons I have learned did not come in the classroom.

Statement from Mayor Tom Bates on the Berkeley Marine Recruiting Center

I have heard from people all over the country regarding the action taken by the Berkeley City Council regarding the Marines recruiting center.

Let me be absolutely clear that this is not about the men and women who are serving our country in our armed forces. I am a retired U.S. Army Captain and I respect the choice of those who are serving our country.

However, this community strongly opposes the war in Iraq and the foreign policy of the current administration. I believed from the beginning that this was an unjust, illegal, and immoral war of choice.

A year ago, the U.S. Marines established a recruiting office within a few blocks of our local high school, community college and university. Since then, community members who oppose the war in Iraq have been exercising their free speech in protesting the presence of the Marine recruiters. Pro-war protestors have also attended to exercise their free speech rights.

On January 28th, the Berkeley City Council took action to waive the permit fee for anti-war protestors one afternoon a week. Any group, whether pro- or anti- war, can obtain such a permit. In addition, the City Council indicated its desire for the Marine recruiting station, as a visible symbol of the war, to be relocated.

I understand that there are people across the country that may not agree with this action but it is the Berkeley City Council’s responsibility to represent the will of the people of Berkeley.

I also understand that the language proposed to the Council did not adequately differentiate our respect and support for those serving in the armed forced and our opposition to the Iraq war policy. I will be working with the Council to clarify that language at our next meeting.

I hope that our country will end the war in Iraq soon and bring our troops home safely. We are truly fortunate to live in a country that can tolerate and accept a range of views and opinions.

    –Mayor Tom Bates

  11. Big Dog says:

    Amen Linda!
Did you notice how this smarmy bast**d said it is fortunate we live where people tolerate a wide range of opinions and views? This after they voted to remove the views of the Marines who are doing a job.

I think you are right, protest in front of his house. We should also not visit and never spend money on anything associated with there. I have seen truckers ask other truckers not to deliver to within a 50 mile radius of there.

They need a message that is loud and clear. Take the federal funds (the college has already violated the Solomon Act) and stop spending there. They will need money so badly they won’t give out free protest passes.

I also wonder if pro war groups could get free protest permits or would they have to pay, 14th Amendment and all….

  17. ams116 says:

way to go big dog. youre bashing a city you dont even live in and the action that city has taken when you dont know everything about it. you assume all marines are personally in favor of the war and that they all share the view that recruiting in their current location is good. marines do not make those kinds of decisions. officers do. marines do what they are told. berkeley is famous for its antiwar protests; especially those that took place during the war in vietnam, but i suppose you feel that war was a good idea too, simply because it the governmnet said so. if you were black and a slave, youd probably think that was also a good idea, simple because the government allowed it.

  18. Big Dog says:

    ams,
you are obviously delusional. I have no expectation that all Marines are in favor of the war. I do know though, that they had to know it was a possibility when they joined the ARMED FORCES.

The location of the recruiting station is irrelevant. The Marines were assigned there and they are doing their job. I don’t care for abortion. Should they shut down the abortion clinics there because I do not like them? Will they give me a free permit to protest the abortion clinic?

The Marines have just as much right (even more really) to be there as the abortion clinics. Amazingly, Code Pinko and the city council will decry the war and the Marines because they kill the enemy and then applaud as women murder their unborn children.

Why don’t you take another hit on the bong and think about that?

  19. Big Dog says:

    Also ams,
War is not good but it is sometimes necessary. No one prays for peace more than a soldier because it is he who must bear the burden of the alternative. Or as the guy in the Karate Kid said. Fighting not good but if must fight, win.

As for slavery, I think it was a stupid thing to do but it was widely accepted and legal in this country. I am glad that the Republican party ended it but I don’t think we owe anyone a damned thing because some of their ancestors were slaves.

  20. Berkeley Student says:

I am a Berkeley Student. I believe Code Pink has a right of free speech and should be allowed to protest the center. I also believe the center has the same right and should be allowed to stay and do its thing. Banning the center would be hypocritical of free speech, wouldn’t it? (In my opinion, the military is a good opportunity for those who lack them)

2nd, I feel as if the students of UC Berkeley are very distant from the city Berkeley. Frankly, I believe many students more the less do not care about Berkeley other than the university.

I am now in the process of burning all of my CAL jerseys and I am officially switching my allegiances to USC! Boycott Berkeley indefinitely!

  22. Brian Dennard says:

On Jan 31, 2008 I wrote a letter to the Mayor of Berkeley stating my position regarding his and the City Counsel’s position on the USMC recruiting station.
I passed that letter along to a couple of Marine handball buddies. They passed that email/letter to the guys who play in the Semper Fi handball tournament at MCRD, who passed it along to, who passed it along to, etc.
In my wildest dreams I never envisioned the response I have received. I now spend ALL DAY answering my cell phone acknowledging that yes, I really did write “THE” letter, and receiving personal thank yous from Generals, Majors, Colonels, SGTs, PVTs, CEOs, COOs, talk show hosts, and average everyday American Patriots. I have received over 600 calls in the past two days (today is the 8th of Feb.) I am privledged and honored to speak with the finest and best people America has to offer.
Likewise I spend the balance reading emails from the same sort of people.
I am humbled to a degree that is hard to state clearly. I am emotionally overwhelmed with the positive response to my letter and want to thank everyone who has called me or emailed me to state their support.
My intention was never to shine the spotlight on me, it was to cause, to whatever degree I could, great fiscal discomfort to the city of Berkeley in retaliation to their un-American, cowardly and despicable stance that the US Marines are unwelcome, and uninvited intruders in their city.
If in my small way I helped light a fire that now appears to be blazing across the nation, I am proud of that, but I am more proud of the fact that I could , at a time when our heroes are fighting against those who would destroy us, help focus some attention to the vast debt, and undying respect, that we as a nation owe to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.

    Respectfully,

    Brian G Dennard

Dear Mayor Bates, Jan 31, 2008

In that you and your city have chosen to gravely insult the brave men and women, who have indeed bought you that right with their blood, I am informing you that my company will no longer do business with any of our current suppliers located in the Berkeley,California metro area.

In that my company is in international resort real estate development, and do business with and am associated with, developers and investors worldwide, I am informing all of my contacts, associates and patrons that we will no longer do any business of any sort with anyone living in the Berkeley area.

In that we/MDG Resorts are currently building a state of the art mega-yacht marina, all of the suppliers of Marina equipment, all owners of Yachts , all suppliers of Yacht materials & supplies, all yacht brokers and all tangential yacht business purveyors will likewise be informed that we will not do any business whatsoever with anyone from the Berkeley area.

Likewise all suppliers of building materials, both interior and exterior, currently associated with any of our several resort developments (Brisamar 300+ villas and 200+ condos: Porto Hussong, http://www.portohussong.com 500+ condos, 180 slip mega-yacht marina) both of which I might add have international recognition by virtue of glowing reports in Robb Report, Wall Street Journal, Yacht World, Forbes.

I will likewise inform all of our investors, most of whom are very wealthy yacht owners, casino owners, high net worth international businessmen, of our decision to essentially boycott all products and providers located in, or associated with in any way whatsoever,Berkeley, Ca.

Trust me when I say that having been in the real estate development business for over 35 years, our list of contacts and associates is long and very, very impressive. We, and I personally, are going to recomend that they ALL along with us boycott your city, its purveyors, suppliers, and businesses and CHARITIES of every kind.

You have every right to choose to take the obnoxious anti-military stance you have taken, and as stated, that right was bought for you with the blood of better men than you.

I too have every right to do all that I can to insure that your city suffers consequences arising from that obnoxious, sickening stance.

I do believe if Berkeley were ever fortunate enough to be attacked, the Marines owe it to them to turn the other cheek. As unwelcome intruders, the Marines (or other services) should not defend Berkeley. Fence it off, we can rename it “New Gaza’ prevent any further intrusions of the hippie holy land and launch occasional rockets in on them from the neighboring lowlife suburbs.

Obviously Berkeley is above the military and expect everyone else in the country to volunteer themselves and their children to defend the nation they live in for them….god bless the royalty of Berkeley, we peasant Americans should realize that blue blood should not be spilt in defense of the Republic.

I personally recommend that all Americans outraged by Berkeley should not do business within the town or organizations with dealings in Berkeley. Our wallets will be mightier than any sword in this case.

The city of Berkeley wants us all to believe that they (somehow) support the troops but are oppose the war. In the face of visual and transcribed eveidence that during the counsel meeting of Jan 29th, wherein they called the Marines, assassins & war criminals, they now expect us to let this pass by pretending that they did not say what in fact they did say.
I beleive (and intend) that without a retraction and apology, the economic boycott should continue
Like the recalcitrant children that they are, they do not understand that there are indeed consequences attached to actions.
The rest of the nation is still waiting to see if we, as patriots, will give Berkeley a pass their actions.
    I for one will not.

I too am a former Marine. I served in an infantry battalion and when I heard about this all I could think about is “How can I make them pay for this?” The council has since retracted their “threat” to send their resolution to the commandant (I’m sure he was worried) & re-worded their original mess, but in my opinion the damage is already done. I have heard 2 of the council members speak about this on the radio & after listening to them babble on, I became convinced that they were going to screw up (b)erkeley on their own, but I still would like to help move that process along a bit faster. The only way that these people will get voted out of office is if thier actions have a negative impact on the population of (b)erkeley. Maybe a list of local companies, their products & where they ship to…who knows maybe boycott the companies that buy products from (b)erkely. 34. Brian Dennard says:

I would beg to differ with your opinion that you are “the only group opposing the city counsels actions”.
You might want to start by reviewing the multitude of addresses CC’d in this email in re-assessing that stance. Next if you would like I could forward some of the 13,000 emails I have received from Americans all across the nation, Iraq and Afghanistan who have asked me to continue on with my/our boycott until Berkeley understands clearly that we will not stand for them calling the USMC (or any other branch of the armed services) “war criminals”, “murderers”, “assassins”, etc.
YOUR high schools supplied (let them take off from school if they wanted to demosntrate against the Military) the foul mouthed children who I witnessed verbally assault elderly women by screaming “you Nazi c***t, get out of Berkeley”, I watched two of their radical, hate filled teachers, whom your city pays to teach these kids, direct these indoctrinated charges to surround and verbally assault elderly veterans screaming the most vile profanities. Where were you while this abomination was going on. Where exactly were you voicing you opposition to the City Counsels position, from underneath your desk? You most certainly were not anywhere near the City Hall.
If you do believe that the City of Berkeley owes the military an apology then write a letter to them clearly stating that position on Chamber of Commerce stationary and cc everyone on this list, otherwise I am afraid that I and most of these other patriots, will come to the conclusion that you have simply written this wimpy, undecipherable gobbledygook in the hopes that we would feel sorry for the poor people of Berkeley and go away.
You have sorely misjudged your opponents. We stand in defense of our warriors, those men and women who are willing to die for us and our way of life. We owe them no less than to stand up to any and all who mistreat and besmersh their good name, and include in that group those who stand on the sideline rather than firmly, tall and proudly in their name with us.
No, Mr. Garret ( I see that you finally had the courage to add your name to the message below, in that when you first contacted me, you simply went by the name “assistant”), this is far from over.
In fact an appropriate way of phrasing this email should have been:
Now that we have your attention…

I have been contacted by Fortune 500 & 400 companies that wish to join in the boycott, in that they too are disgusted with the un-American antics of YOUR elected officials. They are two of the newest additions which already include three vintners, a Fortune 500 Head Hunter recruiter, restaurant suppliers, clothing manufacturers,
and a day labor provider. The list is growing as I recieve an additional 100-150 calls a day and an additional 500 emails. Further I am being interviewed on numerous prominent radio programs wherein I will ask for more companies to join us in the boycott.

YOUR city seems to be hell bent in repeating the sins of the past when you spit on and cursed those returning from Vietnam. WE are hell bent on teaching you that you and your city will never again be allowed mistreat and besmirch the heroes of the United States Armed Forces.

I am a big fan of Cliff Bars, which I have discovered are headquartered in Berkeley. As a veteran, I plan to do my part by no longer purchasing any of their products and to make all veterans that I know, aware of their complicity. I also plan to send an email advising them of my boycott until their mayor and city council members are recalled and code pink is denied their special protest permit.

  37. JP Gomez says:

Here is the letter that I sent to Cliff:
    To whom it may concern,
First, let me start by saying how much I truly love your products. Over the course of the last two and a half years I have lost approximately 30 pounds after I was told by my physician that my weight was extremely unhealthy. I have come to rely on your bars for a quick, nutritious, and tasty snack in my quest to spread my food intake over a 16 hour period. It is with grave disappointment however, that I am now choosing to give up your product entirely and to share my sentiments with anyone I know who enjoys Cliff Bars. Due to the recent controversy involving the City of Berkeley and their determination to alienate and disrespect our nation’s military, I cannot in good conscience spend my money on products or services that are located or headquartered within the city limits. This is truly a personal sacrifice on my part, but it pales in comparison to the sacrifices that are made each and every day by our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. I pray this controversy ends soon, mostly because I feel that this behavior is no less egregious than what veterans endured forty years ago when they returned home from war. I also pray that any and all businesses that may suffer from boycotts will stand up to their host city and call for a recall of the mayor and city council members and a reversal of special treatment towards anti-war organizations that are hurtful and mean spirited such as code pink. The careless actions made by this city council and mayor have already cost its tax payers over $93K which I am sure will continue to rise. Thank you for providing a wonderful food choice to those of us who seek a healthier life, I hope to be purchasing your bars again in the near future.
