Biden’s Staff And False Imprisonment

It is against the law to hold a person against his will. If a private citizen is held by another and is not able to leave then the person is falsely imprisoned. Looks like VP Joe Biden’s staff is guilty of doing just that. At a Democrat fundraiser in the home of a wealthy donor, the Biden staff put a reporter in a room and secured him there so that he would not be able to talk to the guests.

Scott Powers was the pool reporter for the event but when he arrived he was told that the VP and Senator Bill Nelson were not there yet and he would have to wait for them to arrive. He was placed in a small room and a staffer stood guard at the door.

It does not matter why these staffers put him in the closet. The fact is, they falsely imprisoned him. If they did not want him at the event until the politicians arrived then they should have told him to leave or wait outside. Then he would have been free to go. While one could argue that he might have been free to leave, there was a guard at the door and the impression is that he was being held there.

The real issue for me (and it is an issue that the staff of a politician would feel it is OK to do this) is that the reporter did not just walk out. A real man would have told them he was not staying in a closet and then left the event or waited outside.

Where have all the real men gone?

  1. Communication Breakdown

    Our Christian duty calls us
    To say a little prayer,
For those who have bad fortune
Or need the good Lord’s care.

So bow your heads a moment
    And say a prayer sincere,
    For Biden’s lowly staffer
    Who’s ruined his career.

    The VP threw a party
    (For five-hundred a head)
    At Alan Ginsburg’s mansion,
    Inviting those well bred.

    But prior to his entrance
    From D.C. word came down,
    To separate the VP
    From media in town.

And so it was the staffer,
    Who follows orders well,
    Detained the pool reporter
    Within a closet cell.

He did not break out shackles
    Or means to that effect,
    But that lone pool reporter
    Would not with Joe connect.

I’m sad to say that staffer
Was put out on the street,
For he could not be trusted
    In matters most discreet.

    For Washington’s strict orders
    The staffer had misread,
    Were not to cage reporters:
    ’Twas Biden’s cell instead!

    Epilogue:
    I’m well aware this poem
    Is factually incorrect.
But don’t you think with Biden
    It’s true in some respect?

I’m sure, BD, that the reporter knew that he would have been thrown out of the party immediately by a number of large, heavily armed Homeland Security people if he walked out of that closet. And then he wouldn’t get his story, and then he would have been fired for not getting the story he was assigned. At least, I bet that’s what went through the reporter’s head.

The vast majority of people today will do anything to avoid being fired. Just watch how many say, “Gee, I’m just doing my job.”

Young(er) people today more quickly accept restrictions to their personal liberties and think nothing of nanny-state oversight when compared to their elders. The kid could at least have had fun shorting out the eletrical outlet, unscrewing the lights, pulling up the carpet, barricading the door, punching holes in the walls, eliminating on the floor and making noise.
    What was he thinking?

The kidnapping and false imprisonment that never was. Another right wing myth goes viral before it crumbles to pieces.

I guess if they did not want people to think he was imprisoned his paper should not have printed the blog it did giving the impression he was imprisoned.

You can call it a right wing thing but HIS publication started it.

He was not free to leave unless he did not want access to the speeches. Of course, the main part is why did he not man up and leave. And why was he not allowed to see or talk to the guests? Most transparent administration…

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

“You can call it a right wing thing but HIS publication started it.”

I agree that they called it a “prison” on their blog but the way this filtered down through the right wing blogs from Drudge and Red State on down just makes me laugh. Each time it spread it got a little worse until it ended up on your blog where you called it an illegal false imprisonment.

“Of course, the main part is why did he not man up and leave.”

It’s more like what Ogre said. He was there to do his job and he would have lost the interview had he left before Biden arrived. It had little to do with an inability to “man up” or whatever poses for toughness in your eyes.

        “Most transparent administration…”

Obama’s administration has certainly been more transparent than the Bush Administration but it has not done as good as it could. Your example cannot excuse the fact that it has improved in some areas. I wouldn’t call the campaign promise broken but if they’re serious about it they’ll need to do better.

No fecal matter, Sherlock- the facts are that this admin haas been the most opaque in its condescending use of the “phrase that obscures”- such as “Kinetic military action”- a phrase that doesn’t really explain anything, except that progressives simply cannot call a spade a spade. It is a war, Mr. President, and you have to be “progressively retarded” to call it anything else, as we now know Barrie is.
While I believe Ghaddaffi is evil, I do not think we should have interfered in what is a civil war- what if Lincoln had had to contend with England and France openly taking the side of the South?
          Would that have been right?

          • Adam says:

            “Kinetic military action…”

Presidents are careful not to call a war a war. Obama didn’t invent the method even if he did invent a new phrase to continue that pattern.

To be justly critical of Obama’s transparency you’d need to offer examples of how he can do better. If Obama flooded the departments that handle FOIA requests with money and employees your side would just turn around and be more critical of him. When the administration does what it can with limited resources under an ever increasing number of requests for documents you’re still critical. I think Obama is doing fine but needs to do better.

“While I believe Ghaddaffi is evil, I do not think we should have interfered in what is a civil war…”

I really don’t know where I stand on this subject. I think the US should assist the UN in protecting people from tyrant leaders but I’m still not keen on dropping bombs.

            • Blake says:

Ok- if Obama wants to be more transparent, then he should quit with the executive orders and regulations designed to circumvent Congress, and use ALL THREE BRANCHES of government as they were intended.
That would go a long way towards erasing that “weaselly” attitude he has.
