Armed Forces Day, 21 May 2005

Tomorrow, 21 May, is Armed Forces Day. This is the day [Armed Forces Day] that was proclaimed by Harry S. Truman to reflect the unification of our Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. There are many out there who think our military should not be used to defend our nation. There are those who believe that the war in Iraq is illegal and unjust and they are entitled to that opinion but many of those people do not support the troops who are in harm’s way so that people they do not know may live a good life.
I am amazed at the number of people who actually think that war is never necessary or that it should never be waged or that it does not solve problems. I am reminded of the words of 19th Century political philosopher John Stuart Mill:

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war is worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature….”

UPDATE: See the comments for the end of the quote generously supplied by my good friend Dave. I selected the quote after reading some interesting items in the Federalist Patriot in which this quote was referenced. I was hoping to get a few comments from my leftward visitors before posting the rest but if Dave wants to bust their bubble early I’m good with that.. This quote hangs in one of the buildings that I inhabited while in the service. I have always been fond of it.
