And, The Next Candidate Is . . .

With the month coming to a close and the impending announcement of our dubious “Jackass Of The Month” (JOTM) award, the search for next month’s slate is in full swing. Potential candidates have enthusiastically come forward. After all, how could we ignore Baghdad Jane and the salad bus tour? Our new colleague, Timm, also had a few choice words for BJ at his site.

Just yesterday, former President Jimmy Carter threw his hat into the JOTM ring. While speaking at a conference in (of all places) Birmingham, England, he had plenty of negative things to say about his country and, indirectly, his President. (BTW, can anyone explain why only the Democratic past presidents find it acceptable to openly criticize a standing president, while Republican past presidents respect the office if not the person?)

“I think what’s going on in Guantanamo Bay and other places is a disgrace to the U.S.A.,” he told a news conference. “I wouldn’t say it’s the cause of terrorism, but it has given impetus and excuses to potential terrorists to lash out at our country and justify their despicable acts.”

“What has happened at Guantanamo Bay … does not represent the will of the American people,” Carter said. “I’m embarrassed about it, I think its wrong. I think it does give terrorists an unwarranted excuse to use the despicable means to hurt innocent people.” — by Cassandra Vinograd, AP

Apparently, Jimmy forgot the bipartisan Congressional delegation that went to Guantanamo Bay with its entourage of reporters found everything in impressively good shape. He seems to have missed the reports by the military that soldiers are treating the prisoners far better than the prisoners are treating the soldiers, ie. the tossing of bodily fluids generated from every conceivable orifice. And, it seems to have escaped his notice that the reason why Gitmo trials stopped was because one of the prisoners sued. The federal judge halted the Gitmo trials pending resolution. With the suit recently resolved and Bush’s methods vindicated, trials will resume as soon as possible — according to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

The fact that the USS Cole, Pan Am 103, first World Trade Center bombing, 9/11 and the Kobar Towers terrorist attacks (to name a few) occurred long before Afghanistan, Iraq or Gitmo also seems to be unimportant to Carter and those of like and addled mind. But, under the philosophy of Carter and many Dem politicians, why ruin a good barn-burning speech with the truth? Facts only muddy the argument.

Ultimately, Big Dog is the arbiter of finalist in the JOTM contest. Should you have a prospective contestant, contact Big Dog through the sidebar on the left. (Big Dog on the left? Who would have thought it possible?)
